Small Update on Reel

Working on a new reel for 2009. In the meanwhile we've patched our current reel with some new graphics we did for ABC. It was a pretty fun process mixing fully rendered 3D elements (such as the bullet below) with rotoscoped still frames from video. Everything was then put into After Effects, offset in Z space, color corrected, camera added and animated. The full screen title cards (not pictured below) were created with Trapcode Particular and many hours of tweaking. Go check out the reel to see it all in action.

Uber rough animation of the pred mask. Probably going to be full steam on a gig for the next few weeks so who knows when I'll have time again to play with this.

Back in the seat...

No time to go into detail so here's the shorthand: 5 weeks in Scandinavia, brother's wedding right after that, and then back to work. That was all some time ago now. Many new jobs already in and out of the studio and a couple baking as I type this. Will post some of that work soon. Meanwhile
here's a little personal bit of fun. Decided to challenge my poly modeling skills. Why not a Predator mask? As is always the case this is a a"work in progress". Still finessing the model itself while the texturing and lighting is still cursory. Still it's looking pretty nice at this stage. Click to enlarge. Enjoy.

Carbon Ark

This is a little something I put together during down time. Years and years ago JD, my closest friend and business partner of 10 years, and I interviewed for a job at Disney. The position was theatre technician. Another mate of ours (a more experienced tech who had worked for Disney in the past) told us that if we fib on our resume and say we have experience with operating a Carbon Arc spot light that it'd give us and edge over the other applicants. There I sat at the interview, pimple faced and barely 18. Sure enough it came up "I see you have experience with a carbon arc spot? Could you operate one today?" Oh the discomfort. Might as well have said that I could operate a nuclear sub. Today if I'm ever out of my element I call it "Carbon Arcing". I avoid it at all costs.

Makes a great name for a production company though. 'Specially when arc is spelled with a K. K is the new X, man. Ekstreme!

New 3D project

Thought I'd post a work in progress. Still working on the lighting and texture but the modeling is almost done. Eventually it'll animate and slam through a brick wall. Cool. (click image to see it larger)

About Our New Reel

We took a different approach when making this one. Rather than the traditional 5 second top tag followed by a bunch of clips, we decided to create a world that our video lived in. A world born from an abstract story of dreams and manifestation. Hence our 30 second top tag set to the inspired work of composer, Alex Wurman.

Why did we take this rout?

Once upon a time (long ago) I got a call from an editor at DC comics. He'd seen an advertisement I'd done for Dreamer in a comic book (Some time ago we were the busiest comic book lettering studio in the industry). He wanted me to design a logo for him based on the Dreamer logo in the Ad. And so I did. Hopes are that maybe someone will see our reel and be inspired by the 30 second open. I'd love to design something based on it for an on air project. Failing that, I'd love to design anything that involves sending an invoice.

It does sadden me some that the compression for the web kills a lot of the nuance. I may upload to this blog a cleaner version of just the open.
